In a dramatic incident during a Major League Cricket match, fast-bowler Carmi le Roux of the San Francisco Unicorns suffered a frightening blow to the head from a powerful shot by batter Ryan Rickleton of the Seattle Orcas. It occurred during le Roux's second over, catching him off guard and causing severe facial bleeding. Despite the impact, le Roux displayed remarkable composure, walking off the field unassisted.
During the third over, South African le Roux was struck on the head by a shot from compatriot Rickleton, who aimed straight but the ball hit the bowler instead. Medical staff promptly attended to le Roux, but fortunately, he managed to leave the field under his own power, much to everyone's relief.
Following le Roux's departure, former New Zealand and current USA all-rounder Corey Anderson completed the over. Despite le Roux's absence, the San Francisco Unicorns defended their total of 165 runs, limiting the Seattle Orcas to 142.
Liam Plunkett, the former England paceman aged 39, excelled with figures of 3/26 in four overs, contributing significantly to the Unicorns' victory.
In subsequent matches, the Seattle Orcas faced another setback, losing to the Los Angeles Knight Riders, which pushed them to the bottom of the Major League Cricket season two standings. This contrasts sharply with their previous season's performance when they had topped the table.
Currently, the Orcas have managed only one win in five games. Defending champions MI New York also find themselves in a precarious position, sitting fifth and outside the playoff spots.
The MLC season two commenced on July 5, 2024, with the final scheduled for July 28.
