1. Gujarat Titans' Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has taken over as the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT), a team that had a remarkable debut in the IPL in 2022, winning the title in their first season and finishing as runners-up in 2023. Following Hardik Pandya's departure to lead Mumbai Indians, Gill is now responsible for leading GT and batting at the top order. The pressure is on for Gill as he takes on this new role. Despite the team's reliance on him, the absence of key players has left GT's batting lineup vulnerable. Gill's performance will be crucial, especially considering his remarkable feat of winning the Orange Cap last season by scoring 890 runs in 17 matches. Gill's leadership and batting prowess will be key to GT's success in the 2024 IPL, with a formidable bowling attack to support him. His recent form in the England Test series, where he scored 90 and a century, underlines his ability to perform under pressure and reaffirms his status as a key asset for GT.

2. Lucknow Super Giants' KL Rahul

KL Rahul, the captain of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), faces the challenging task of leading a team that made its IPL debut in 2022. Despite being a new franchise, LSG has relied heavily on Rahul's batting. The opener has consistently delivered big scores. However, the team’s imbalance, caused by an excess of openers, including Rahul himself, poses a challenge. After suffering an injury midway through the 2023 season, Rahul made a remarkable comeback during the 2023 World Cup, scoring 386 runs in 10 matches. Once again, Rahul took on the responsibility of leading LSG forward with key players such as Quinton de Kock in a slump and uncertainty surrounding the batting line-up. Rahul, alongside players such as Deepak Hooda, Kyle Mayers, and Devdutt Padikkal, will play a crucial role in anchoring the team's batting unit and leading LSG to success in IPL 2024. His importance as a leader and reliable run-scorer for LSG is underlined by his consistent performances in previous IPL seasons, including 616 runs in 2022 and 273 runs in 2023.

3. Royal Challengers Bangalore's Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, the esteemed batsman of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has returned to his best form. After stepping down as captain in 2021, he has made a remarkable comeback. RCB's history in the IPL has often been a tale of unfulfilled promise, with a familiar narrative of near misses. But this season, the team faces additional challenges. Faf du Plessis, the designated captain, has been struggling with diminishing form, as evidenced by his struggles in the recent SA20 tournament. Amidst these uncertainties, Kohli's exceptional batting skills reignite hope for RCB fans. The talismanic cricketer has amassed an impressive 765 runs in just 11 matches. However, adding to the pressure on the batting line-up, the team is heavily reliant on the contributions of Glenn Maxwell. Additionally, RCB's bowling department lacks experience, which is exacerbated by their unsuccessful ventures in the auction. As the IPL 2024 season progresses, Kohli's resurgence provides hope, but RCB must comprehensively address their challenges to achieve their championship aspirations.

4. Punjab Kings' Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh has been a key player for Punjab Kings (PBKS) since his debut in 2019. Despite changes in the roster and leadership, he has remained a constant presence and a backbone of PBKS' bowling attack. With 57 wickets in 51 matches, his breakthrough season in 2023 showcased his ability to consistently take down stumps, picking up 17 wickets in just 14 games - a rare feat in a team plagued by inconsistency. Although other bowlers, such as Kagiso Rabada, struggled to find form, Arshdeep emerged as the go-to bowler for PBKS. However, Arshdeep has found himself fighting a lonely battle with the ball after the team failed to add any new firepower in the auction. With no significant additions to bolster the squad, PBKS finds itself in a familiar position, relying heavily on Arshdeep's prowess to lead their bowling unit in IPL 2024.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad's Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins, the 30-year-old Australian cricketer, made headlines in the IPL auction when he was snapped up by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 20.50 crore. Cummins is known for his exceptional bowling and middle-order batting skills and brings valuable experience to the SRH squad. Despite his addition to the team, SRH has had disappointing finishes in the IPL in recent seasons, placing in the bottom half of the table. The team has faced challenges due to weaknesses in their Indian core and inconsistent performances from key players. There are also concerns about SRH's prospects in the upcoming IPL season due to their failure to address certain areas of the squad, such as the lack of a quality spinner to replace Rashid Khan from 2021 onwards. Although Cummins strengthens the team's bowling attack, SRH requires a collective effort from all players to overcome challenges and compete effectively in IPL 2024.
