T20 World Cup 2024: Interesting out-takes

Now that the T20 World Cup 2024 has concluded, we have delved into the statistics to highlight 20 notable figures from the tournament.

Overall Run Rate

The overall run rate was 7.09, marking the lowest ever in a men's T20 World Cup. The previous lowest was 7.43, recorded in the 2021 edition in the UAE.

Record Number of Sixes

The tournament saw 517 sixes, making it the first T20 World Cup to surpass 500 sixes. The previous highest was 405 in 2021.

The balls-per-six ratio was 21.35, the best ever. Additionally, the ratio of fours to sixes was 1.86, the lowest among all editions.

India's Unbeaten Run

India became the first team to win the men's T20 World Cup without losing a single game. They won all eight matches, with one group-stage game against Canada being abandoned without a toss.

Lack of Centuries

The 2009 and 2024 editions are the only men's T20 World Cups without an individual century. In 2009, Tillakaratne Dilshan's unbeaten 96 against the West Indies was the highest score, while Nicholas Pooran's 98 against Afghanistan was the highest in 2024.

Four-Plus Wicket Hauls

There were 19 instances of bowlers taking four or more wickets in a match, the highest in any men's T20 World Cup, surpassing the 14 such instances in 2021.

Bumrah's Economy Rate

Jasprit Bumrah had an economy rate of 4.17, the best for anyone who bowled 100 or more balls in a single edition of the men's T20 World Cup. The most he conceded in a match was 29 runs against Australia.

Bumrah's Unique Achievement

Bumrah took 15 wickets and conceded only 12 boundaries, including two sixes, in his 29.4 overs. He also became the first to win the Player-of-the-Tournament award in a T20 World Cup without scoring a run, having faced a golden duck against Pakistan.

Two players achieved similar feats in ODI World Cups: Glenn McGrath in 2007, who did not bat at all in 11 matches, and Mitchell Starc in 2015, who faced three balls across three innings without scoring.

Rishabh Pant's Record

Rishabh Pant had 14 dismissals as a wicketkeeper (13 catches and one stumping), a record for any player in a men's T20 World Cup.

Top Wicket Takers

Arshdeep Singh and Fazalhaq Farooqi both took 17 wickets, the highest ever in a men's T20 World Cup, surpassing Wanindu Hasaranga's 16 in 2021.

Low-Scoring Victories

There were five instances of teams winning despite scoring 120 or less in a full 20-over first innings, compared to only one such instance, before 2024 (Sri Lanka's win after being bowled out for 119 against New Zealand in 2014).

Rohit Sharma's Milestone

Rohit Sharma became the first player to win the men's T20 World Cup as both a player (in 2007) and as a captain (in 2024). Daren Sammy won the title twice as a captain (2012 and 2016), with seven other West Indies players part of those two victories.

Increase in Maiden Overs

There was a 109.52% increase in maiden overs compared to the previous highest. A total of 44 maiden overs were bowled in the 52 completed matches, compared to 21 across 27 games in 2012. The 44 maidens accounted for 28.95% of all maiden overs in men's T20 World Cups.

Final Match Fifties

The difference in balls taken for the two individual fifties in the final was 25. Virat Kohli took 48 balls, while Heinrich Klaasen took 23 balls. Klaasen's 23-ball fifty is the fastest in an ICC tournament final, while Kohli's 48-ball fifty was the slowest of his T20 career.

Afghanistan's Performance

Afghanistan's win-loss record was 5-3. They bowled out their opponents in all five wins, tying with Australia in 2010 for the most such instances. Conversely, they were bowled out in all three losses, the joint-highest for any team in a men's T20 World Cup.

No Sixes Match

The match between New Zealand and Uganda saw no sixes hit, making it only the third such match in men's T20 World Cup history (excluding shortened games). The other instances were South Africa vs. Zimbabwe in 2012 and the Netherlands vs. Pakistan in 2022.

Winless Teams

Papua New Guinea and Oman were the only teams without a point, losing all four matches they played. This was the highest number of matches played without a win in a single edition of the men's T20 World Cup.

Pant's Run Total

Rishabh Pant scored 171 runs, the second-highest in a single edition without a half-century. Anamul Haque scored 184 runs for Bangladesh in 2014, with a highest of 44*. Pant's highest score was 42 against Pakistan.

Tristan Stubbs scored 165 runs, with the best of 33, the fifth-highest in a T20 World Cup without a fifty.

Mohammad Amir's Unique Record

Mohammad Amir bowled 96 balls without conceding a six, the most in this World Cup. He is the first bowler to achieve this in two different editions, having bowled 139 balls without being hit for a six in 2010, the second-highest behind Umar Gul's 147 balls in 2009.

Kohli's Fours

Virat Kohli hit only two fours in his first seven matches, then surpassed that tally in the first over of the final by hitting Marco Jansen for three fours.
