With Bumrah Out, Who Will Bowl for India?
India asserted their dominance in the third Test in Rajkot, clinching a resounding 434-run victory over England and securing a 2-1 lead in the series as they head towards the next match.
Jasprit Bumrah emerged as a standout performer on the bowling front, leading the wicket-taking statistics with a stellar performance across all three Tests. However, the workload management program is likely to see Bumrah rested in the upcoming Test in Ranchi. In a strategic move, India had previously rested Mohammed Siraj in Visakhapatnam, showcasing their commitment to managing player workloads effectively.
The 30-year-old Bumrah showcased his skills in the Vizag Test, playing a pivotal role in India's triumph with a total of nine wickets, including an impressive six for 45 in the first innings. With 17 wickets at an average of 13.65 from 80.5 overs bowled in the series so far, Bumrah's contributions have been instrumental to India's success.
In preparation for the Ranchi Test, where spin-friendly conditions are expected, India is exploring options to replace Bumrah. Considering the pitch's traditional favour towards spinners, India may opt for an additional spinner or a medium pacer to complement Siraj's bowling attack.
The Indian Express lists four players who might enter the game this Friday to cover for Bumrah, starting with Mukesh Kumar. Having had a relatively subdued performance in his three Tests, the 30-year-old Bengal pacer returned to form with an impressive ten-wicket match haul in a First-Class game at the Eden Gardens. Known for excelling on varying pitches, Mukesh could be a suitable replacement for Bumrah if India opts for a like-for-like seam bowler.
Recently earning his maiden call-up to the Indian team, Akash Deep presents another seam option alongside Siraj for the Ranchi Test. With a strong track record in red-ball cricket, including a notable performance against England Lions, the 27-year-old Bengal quick has the potential to make an impact in the upcoming match.
However, should spin play a crucial role in the Ranchi Test, India may consider including an additional spinner in place of Bumrah. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar emerge as viable options, with Axar offering left-arm spin and Sundar providing off-spin variations. While Axar was omitted in the previous Test to diversify the spin department, Sundar's versatility could prove valuable on the spin-friendly Ranchi pitch.
