Yashasvi Bhupendra Kumar Jaiswal, born on 28 December 2001, is a cricketer from India who represents the Indian national team in Test matches and T20Is. He marked his entry into international cricket during the first Test against the West Indies in July 2023, impressively scoring a century in his debut innings in Test cricket. Jaiswal is also a part of the Mumbai domestic cricket team and plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Notably, in 2019, he achieved the distinction of being the youngest cricketer to score a double century in List A cricket.
His incredible journey is worth retelling. As a 10-year-old boy from Bhadohi, eastern Uttar Pradesh, he embarked on a 1,000-mile journey with his father to Mumbai, leaving behind his home district. Yashasvi Jaiswal's father left him in Mumbai under the care of his uncle, while he returned to the rest of the family. Initially, Jaiswal found himself working in a dairy shop to make ends meet. However, he soon seized an opportunity to live in a tent belonging to a groundsman at the renowned Azad Maidan cricket ground. Living in challenging conditions, he sustained himself on a scarce diet consisting mostly of glucose biscuits and occasional free meals. Despite the hardships, Jaiswal's focus remained single-mindedly fixed on cricket. He dedicated himself to countless hours of net practice and participated in numerous matches, channelling his determination into honing his batting skills. Jaiswal reflected on his solitary journey, saying, "I have been alone for a long, long time. When my father left, it was very hard for me at first. Slowly, I got used to it. I got busy."
Following a couple of years of residing in the tent at the Maidan, where he spent his days playing cricket from sunrise to sunset and occasionally earning a small amount of pocket money by assisting food vendors selling panipuri, Yashasvi Jaiswal caught the attention of cricket coach Jwala Singh. Recognising Jaiswal's potential, Singh took him under his wing and eventually became his legal guardian and obtained power of attorney. Together, they embarked on an unwavering pursuit of their shared dream, putting in relentless effort and dedication to make Jaiswal's cricketing aspirations a reality.
Yashasvi Jaiswal gained recognition in 2015 after an outstanding performance in a Giles Shield match where he scored an unbeaten 319 runs and took 13 wickets for 99 runs, setting a record for all-round performance in school cricket in India. This remarkable achievement led to his selection in the Mumbai under-16 squad and subsequently in the India national under-19 cricket team. Jaiswal continued to shine on the international stage, notably scoring 318 runs and earning the title of Player of the Tournament in the 2018 Under-19 Asia Cup, in which India emerged victorious.
In 2019, Yashasvi showcased his batting mastery once again, scoring an exceptional 173 runs from 220 balls in a Youth Test match against South Africa under-19s. Later that same year, he took part in the under-19 tri-series in England, where he accumulated 294 runs in seven matches, including four half-centuries. Jaiswal's consistent performances earned him a spot in India's squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. During the tournament, he grew into the leading run-scorer and was awarded the impressive “Player of the Tournament” title. Moreover, he scored a century in the semifinal match against Pakistan, further solidifying his reputation as a rising star in Indian cricket.
During those initial, lonely days, the kid would often stand outside his tent and gaze at the illuminated floodlights of Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, piercing through the night sky. On 30th April of 2023, Jaiswal found himself inside that very same iconic ground, living out his dreams as he smashed a remarkable maiden century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Scoring a magnificent 124 runs from just 62 balls for the Rajasthan Royals against the Mumbai Indians, Jaiswal displayed his exceptional batting prowess and ability to reflect on his extraordinary journey. Even during his innings, he had the presence of mind to acknowledge his achievements, recalling his dream as a young child "standing there and watching the lights." Yashasvi Jaiswal regards his unique journey with deep importance, stating, "It will always be in my mind." The memories of his difficult path serve as a constant source of confidence and motivation for him. Jaiswal believes that his experiences have instilled within him a fighting spirit, ensuring that he remains prepared to face any challenge that may arrive his way. “It always gives me confidence and a fighting spirit that, whatever situation may come, I will be ready,” he said.
Yashasvi proved his preparedness for the challenge presented by England. He remained focused and determined, delivering outstanding performances that left no room for doubt. His double centuries in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot extinguished any continuing illusions England may have stalled following their initial victory in Hyderabad, which was propelled by Ollie Pope's impressive knock of 196 runs. Pope's innings was deservedly hailed as one of the great overseas centuries by an England player.
