Delhi Capitals failed to capitalise on the strong start provided by Mitchell Marsh and David Warner, scoring only 174/9 in their opening match of IPL 2024 against Punjab Kings.
After winning the toss, Shikhar Dhawan elected to bat first. Warner and Marsh began aggressively, putting on 39 runs in just 3.2 overs before Arshdeep Singh dismissed Marsh. The Australian T20I captain Warner scored 20 runs off 12 balls, hitting two fours and two sixes.
Warner scored 29 runs off 21 balls, hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes.
Shai Hope was the Capitals' top scorer with 33 runs off 25 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes, but his dismissal halted their momentum. Upon his return, Rishabh Pant hit 2 fours during his brief stay at the crease, scoring 18 runs off 13 balls.
Ricky Bhui (3) and Tristan Stubbs (5) were dismissed early in the innings. Axar Patel contributed 21 runs to the total but was unfortunately run out, leaving Delhi in a precarious position.
Abhishek Porel, the impact player, played some big shots to take the total to 174/9 in 20 overs. He smashed Harshal Patel for 25 runs in the last over of the innings, finishing unbeaten on 32 runs off 10 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes.
For Punjab Kings, Arshdeep and Harshal Patel took two wickets apiece.
