Ahead of the crucial Test series against India, Bangladesh is concerned about Shakib Al Hasan's recent struggles with the bat, despite his continued success with the ball. Selector Hannan Sarkar expressed faith in the veteran all-rounder, backing him to regain form soon.
While Shakib has been a key performer with the ball, his batting has caused worry about Bangladesh. The 37-year-old has managed only 38 runs from two matches during the Pakistan tour, with an average of 19 and the highest score of 21 not out. His struggles continued in the County Championship, where he scored just 12 runs for Surrey against Somerset in Taunton, falling to Jack Leach in a caught-and-bowled dismissal.
Hannan Sarkar acknowledged Shakib's lack of rhythm with the bat but emphasised the unique opportunity Test cricket provides for players to regain form. "Shakib is not in rhythm, and form is crucial. In T20Is and ODIs, you have to accelerate quickly, but in Test cricket, there's time to rediscover form. I believe, given Shakib’s stature, he’ll be back soon," Sarkar said during a press conference.
Sarkar also addressed the exclusion of fast bowler Shoriful Islam from the Test squad, citing his recovery from a groyne injury. Sarkar explained that the team is prioritising Shoriful's fitness for the upcoming T20I series and did not want to risk aggravating his condition during the Tests.
Bangladesh's opening Test against India begins on September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
