Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has highlighted the reasons behind the decline in the form of talented fast bowler Umran Malik. The right-arm pacer, known for his ability to reach speeds over 145 kmph, has struggled with his accuracy and consistency lately. Despite making a promising debut in the IPL in 2021, where he took two wickets in three matches, Umran truly shone in the 2022 season, claiming 22 wickets in 14 games.
Mhambrey emphasised the importance of developing Umran's talent, especially his natural pace, which made him stand out initially. However, the coach stressed the significance of control and line and length in bowling, aspects that Umran has found challenging in recent times. Despite showcasing his potential in IPL and earning national caps in limited-overs cricket, Umran's performances have been inconsistent, particularly in T20s.
With Umran's top speed reaching 157 kmph in IPL and 156 kmph in international matches, his lack of control has led to conceding runs and losing the trust of captains. Mhambrey believes that playing in the Ranji Trophy will help Umran refine his skills and gain the necessary control to succeed in the demanding T20 format. The coach is focused on guiding Umran towards regaining his form and becoming a more effective and reliable pace bowler.
