Ashwin and Gambhir are preparing for Test

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke highly of his relationship with Gautam Gambhir as they prepared to work together for the first time in India’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh in September. The Tamil Nadu cricketer expressed his respect for the former opener, who recently took over as head coach of the Indian men’s team.

Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach after India’s T20 World Cup victory. Gambhir’s first assignment saw India secure a T20I series win but suffer a rare ODI series loss in Sri Lanka. With 10 Tests remaining in the current World Test Championship cycle, Gambhir faces significant challenges ahead.

“Gautam is someone I share a very strong relationship with because he is straightforward and honest. He’s a hero of Indian cricket and someone we should always support,” Ashwin told PTI.

Ashwin’s role will be crucial in India’s Test season, where he’ll be eager to challenge the visiting batters. India’s schedule includes a two-Test series and three T20Is against Bangladesh in September-October, followed by a three-Test series against New Zealand starting October 16. The season culminates with an unprecedented five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia from November to January, where Ashwin hopes to secure a spot in the playing XI.

The off-spinner, who has played 66 matches, including 16 Tests, alongside Gambhir, emphasised their positive rapport. Gambhir has consistently praised Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket over the years.

Reflecting on his recent success leading the Dindigul Dragons to victory in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, Ashwin discussed the significance of young players finding motivation to represent the national team.

“I’m glad that many young cricketers are now earning well and improving their family’s status. It’s fantastic for Indian cricket,” Ashwin said. “However, there should still be incentives for these kids to aspire to play for India, which lies in the hands of stakeholders and decision-makers.”
