New Zealand wicketkeeper Tom Blundell has acknowledged that the Indian cricket team underestimated them following the Blackcaps' disappointing tour of Sri Lanka. As they prepare for the third Test in Mumbai with an unassailable 2-0 lead over the top-ranked Indian squad, the Kiwis are aiming for a historic series whitewash.
Blundell shared, “When we arrived, there was a slogan suggesting a 5-0 sweep for India in their home summer.” He believes the Indian team expected an easy series after New Zealand's earlier struggles but is now “shell-shocked” by the Blackcaps’ remarkable performance.
He commented, “They’re surprised by what we’ve achieved, competing against one of the world’s best teams and proving our mettle.” Blundell notes that India, still reeling from the series defeat, will likely be fierce competitors in the final Test. However, regardless of the upcoming match's outcome, New Zealand can take pride in becoming the first team to win a Test series in India in twelve years.
Blundell added, “The stakes remain high with the World Test Championship also in play, fuelling our motivation. India might be feeling the sting of this series. Yet, we’re leaving New Zealand with immense satisfaction. This is one of the standout moments of my career, and we’re eager for a potential 3-0 finish, but we’re already proud of what we’ve accomplished.”
