Can Virat Reignite His Test Form?

As India gears up to take on New Zealand in the Test match at Bengaluru, all eyes are on Virat Kohli to rediscover his prolific run-scoring ability. Following a challenging start to 2024, this series presents a crucial chance for Kohli to regain his form just in time for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Bengaluru Test, beginning October 16, is particularly significant for Kohli, as the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has served as his home ground for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) over the last 17 years. The familiar surroundings, coupled with the gearing up for the intense series against Australia, create an ideal backdrop for Kohli to find his stride once again.

This year has been a tough one for Kohli in Test cricket, with only three matches played—two against Bangladesh and one against South Africa—resulting in a mere 157 runs, his highest being a modest 64. This performance falls short of his usual standards, prompting questions regarding his ability to bounce back. However, with the opportunity to play in all three matches of the New Zealand series, Kohli has a platform to test his techniques and sharpen his skills.

In a pre-match press conference, head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed confidence in Kohli’s abilities, emphasising the importance of the upcoming series for him, especially with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the horizon.

“My perspective on Virat has always been straightforward. He's a world-class player, has been performing consistently for a long time, and his hunger for runs remains just as strong as it was when he debuted,” Gambhir remarked.

Kohli’s performance will be crucial as India prepares for the series against Australia, which boasts a formidable bowling lineup featuring Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon. With skipper Rohit Sharma potentially sidelined for the first Test against Australia due to personal reasons, Kohli's experience and leadership will be more vital than ever.

Kohli's impressive history against Australia is noteworthy; in 13 Tests played in Australia, he has scored 1,352 runs, including six centuries and four half-centuries. His memorable 169-run innings during the 2014 series is still celebrated, and similar performances will be expected as India faces this fierce rival.

Despite the weather forecast indicating possible rain in Bengaluru, the enthusiasm surrounding Kohli’s chance to return to form remains high. Fans are hopeful for a spectacular showing in this series opener, serving as an ideal prelude to the upcoming clash with Australia.
