In the Indian Premier League 2024, Lucknow Super Giants emerged victorious over Mumbai Indians by four wickets. The game was unfortunately marred by a controversial run-out decision. KN Ananthapadmanabhan was strongly criticized by Irfan Pathan and Varun Aaron for making an incorrect decision to declare Ayush Badoni run out.
On the first ball of the 19th over, Badoni and Nicholas Pooran attempted a double. Ishan Kishan was unable to dislodge the bails initially, and when he did, the batter had already reached the crease.
The decision was referred to the third umpire, who, after reviewing the replays, determined that the bat was inside the crease before it went up in the air due to the impact of the diving batter. As a result, Badoni was declared out.
The entire LSG camp was dissatisfied, and head coach Justin Langer was observed consulting with the fourth umpire. Even the MI players were taken aback by the result.
Ultimately, the incorrect decision did not prevent Lucknow from securing the victory.
Irfan Pathan said:
“It seems the umpire is not aware of the rules. Once the bat is inside the crease and even if it is lifted due to the impact, the batter can’t be declared out. The umpire was wrong.”
