Davies became a player to surpass 1,000 runs in Division One
Warwickshire 112 for 4 (Davies 58) trail Worcestershire 307 (D'Oliveira 76, Waite 53) by 195 runs.
Warwickshire captain Alex Davies became the first player to surpass 1,000 runs in Division One of the Vitality County Championship this summer, during a rain-shortened second day against Worcestershire at New Road.
Davies, 30, entered the innings needing just 34 runs to reach the milestone. He achieved it in style, hitting a boundary off Logan van Beek in the morning session. Surrey’s Rory Burns, Davies’ closest rival, was dismissed for 21 in Somerset's match, remaining at 974 runs.
This is the second time Davies has reached the 1,000-run mark in a season. The first instance was in 2017 when he became the first Lancashire wicket-keeper to achieve the feat. Since moving to Warwickshire in 2022, his first two seasons were less productive, but this summer has seen a resurgence, with four centuries and an impressive average of 56.88.
Davies’ innings came to an end when he was bowled by Ethan Brookes for 58. Brookes delivered a nine-over spell that claimed two wickets before rain and bad light halted play at 2:15 pm, with only 37 overs possible.
Earlier in the day, Warwickshire wrapped up Worcestershire’s first innings after just four overs, though not before the hosts secured a second batting point. Chris Rushworth took two quick wickets, but Tom Taylor remained unbeaten on 36. Taylor later made the first breakthrough with the new ball, dismissing Rob Yates for a duck.
Davies entertained the crowd with his aggressive batting, reaching his half-century off just 59 balls. However, Brookes struck again after lunch, dismissing both Will Rhodes and Davies, while van Beek claimed his first wicket when Sam Hain was bowled for 11.
Despite the rain, fans who stayed until the end were treated to a humorous soundtrack of weather-themed songs over the PA system, including "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and "It’s Raining Men."
