Devajit Saikia Takes Charge as Acting BCCI Secretary

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Devajit Saikia as the acting secretary, following an appointment by President Roger Binny. This interim move comes after Jay Shah vacated the role to assume his new responsibilities as ICC chair, starting December 1.

Saikia, a former first-class cricketer from Assam, currently serves as the BCCI joint-secretary and holds the position of Advocate General of Assam. His appointment as acting secretary leverages Binny’s constitutional authority to ensure continuity until a permanent secretary is selected, in accordance with BCCI regulations.

In an official letter addressed to Saikia, Binny referenced clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution, empowering him to transfer secretarial responsibilities temporarily.

"The president shall in the event of vacancy or indisposition shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is duly filled up or indisposition ceases."
"Accordingly, I delegate the functions of secretary to you till the post is filled up by processes laid down as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will perform the duties to the best of your abilities and with aplomb," Binny wrote to Saikia.

Saikia is expected to hold this position until September next year, providing the board ample time to finalise a permanent appointment for the role.
