Dhawan announces his retirement

Virat Kohli penned an emotional message for Shikhar Dhawan after the veteran opener announced his retirement on Saturday, bringing an end to his remarkable cricketing career.

Shikhar Dhawan, one of India's most celebrated openers, officially called time on his international career, nearly two years after his last appearance for the national team. Dhawan made his international debut in 2010, embarking on a journey filled with memorable performances and unforgettable moments.

Following his retirement announcement, a wave of tributes poured in from former and current cricketers, acknowledging Dhawan’s significant contributions to Indian cricket. Among them, Virat Kohli took to his official X profile to express his admiration and gratitude for his longtime teammate. Kohli and Dhawan shared the dressing room for both the Indian team and their state team, Delhi. Alongside Rohit Sharma, the trio dominated the white-ball formats throughout much of the 2010s.

In his tribute, Kohli praised Dhawan as one of India’s “most dependable openers” and expressed his appreciation for the left-hander’s invaluable contributions.

"Shikhar @SDhawan25, from your fearless debut to becoming one of India's most dependable openers, you've given us countless memories to cherish. Your passion for the game, your sportsmanship, and your trademark smile will be missed, but your legacy lives on. Thank you for the memories, unforgettable performances, and always leading with your heart. Wishing you the best in your next innings, off the field, Gabbar!" wrote Kohli.

Earlier this year, Kohli himself stepped away from T20I cricket after India’s T20 World Cup victory in June, but he continues to be a crucial member of the team in ODIs and Tests. Kohli and Dhawan were pivotal in India’s 2013 Champions Trophy triumph, cementing their status as one of the most feared batting duos.

Reflecting on his journey, Dhawan shared a heartfelt message on X, saying, “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind!”

Dhawan’s contributions to Indian cricket, particularly in the 50-over format, are immense. He amassed 6,793 runs at an impressive average of 44.11, including 17 centuries and 39 fifties. Though his Test career was shorter, it was highlighted by his sensational debut knock of 185 against Australia. He finished his Test career with 2,315 runs at an average of 40.61, including seven centuries.
