Ex-Indian coach gives the reason behind choosing Yadav captaincy
Former Team India fielding coach R. Sridhar has highlighted Suryakumar Yadav's strong leadership qualities and the positive impact of his rapport with teammates as key factors in his appointment as T20I captain. Despite expectations that Hardik Pandya, the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup 2024, would succeed Rohit Sharma following his retirement from T20Is, new head coach Gautam Gambhir selected Yadav for the role.
Sridhar noted that Yadav’s consistent presence and leadership during his tenure with the Indian team have significantly contributed to his selection. "Suryakumar has consistently demonstrated leadership qualities and has a strong connection with the team. His relationship with the players and their respect for him were crucial in this decision," Sridhar told Hindustan Times.
He also agreed with chief selector Ajit Agarkar's point that Yadav's availability without concerns about workload management was a significant factor.
Sridhar also expressed confidence that Hardik Pandya, despite being overlooked for leadership roles at the moment, will return to prominence. "Hardik has proven his worth by winning a World Cup. He is a rare talent, and I’m sure he will come back strongly," he said.
He added that efforts would be made to ensure Pandya is well-managed and available for key series and ICC tournaments. Sridhar, who served as India’s fielding coach from 2014 to 2021, has worked closely with both Yadav and Pandya.
