Filling the Void: Vihari Reflects on Pujara's Impact Ahead of BG Trophy

Hanuma Vihari, a key figure in India's back-to-back Test series victories in Australia, has highlighted the significant role Cheteshwar Pujara played in those wins and expressed concerns over filling the void left by the veteran's absence in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Pujara was instrumental in India's triumphs during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 series, amassing 521 and 271 runs, respectively. In 2018-19, he faced 1,258 deliveries, wearing down a formidable Australian bowling attack consisting of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc. Vihari pointed out that Pujara's ability to take body blows and endure long innings allowed others, such as Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rishabh Pant, to capitalise and score crucial runs.

With Pujara no longer in favour, Vihari questioned who would take on the pivotal role of anchoring India's batting lineup during the five-Test series, starting November 22 in Perth. Vihari stressed that Pujara's ability to absorb pressure and tire out the bowlers made life easier for other batters, adding, "He was the backbone of the batting lineup. He took blows, batted time, and faced the new ball, which made things easier for the rest."

While expressing concerns about the current top six's attacking mindset, Vihari noted that Virat Kohli is likely to play the role of the glue in the lineup, being the one capable of batting long and seeing off the new ball. He also mentioned the importance of K.L. Rahul at number six, citing his experience in SENA countries, and suggested Rishabh Pant is best suited for number five.

Vihari added that the tour will be Yashasvi Jaiswal’s biggest test yet, as the young batter has excelled at home but needs to prove himself in challenging overseas conditions. He emphasised the mental toughness required to face Australia in their home conditions, especially in a five-Test series.

In conclusion, Vihari stressed the need for adaptability and resilience, as India's pursuit of a third consecutive series victory in Australia hinges on how well the team fills Pujara's absence.
