Former England all-rounder sustained severe facial injuries
Andrew Flintoff has opened up emotionally about the challenges he’s been facing after his horrific car crash while filming for *Top Gear* in 2022. The former England all-rounder sustained severe facial injuries and required surgery following the incident. In a recent interview, Flintoff revealed how the experience has left him struggling with anxiety, flashbacks, and nightmares. Despite receiving £9 million in compensation and BBC suspending the production of the show, Flintoff admitted that coping with the aftermath has been extremely difficult.
Flintoff’s candid discussion took place during his new series, *Freddie Flintoff's Field of Dreams on Tour*. He shared that he often finds it hard to ask for help and is still dealing with intense emotions. “I genuinely should not be here after what happened,” he said, emphasising that while he doesn’t seek sympathy, he’s finding it tough to manage his mental health. “I’m struggling already and need help. I really am. I’m not the best at asking for it. I need to stop crying every two minutes,” he added.
However, Flintoff is determined to stay positive, viewing this as a second chance at life. He also mentioned being inspired by the resilience of the young people he’s working with in his new role. The experience brought out a vulnerable side of Flintoff, who admitted to getting emotional while talking about his journey.
Earlier this year, Flintoff returned to cricket as part of England’s coaching staff for their Test tour of India, although he was initially unsure if he could handle the anxiety associated with travelling. He’s now taken up his first full-time coaching role with Northern Superchargers in *The Hundred*, marking a significant step forward in his recovery and career.
