Gambhir Supports Jasprit Bumrah Regarding Workload Management
Newly appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasised the importance of workload management for bowlers, particularly Jasprit Bumrah, in his first press conference before the Sri Lanka tour.
Gambhir, who is set to begin his tenure with the team, highlighted that while batters like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be expected to participate in as many games as possible, the approach to managing fast bowlers will differ. Kohli and Rohit, having retired from T20Is after the World Cup, will focus on ODIs and Tests. Bumrah, on the other hand, has been rested for the entire Sri Lanka tour to ensure his fitness for crucial matches.
“Workload management for someone like Bumrah is crucial,” Gambhir said. “He is a rare kind of bowler who is invaluable to any team. It is our responsibility to keep him fresh for the most important games. This approach applies not only to Bumrah but to other fast bowlers as well.”
Bumrah, who was named Player of the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean last year, has been a pivotal figure in India’s bowling attack. He took 15 wickets during the World Cup and played a key role in India’s run to the ODI World Cup final. Known for his exceptional power play economy rate of 4.39 over the past four years, Bumrah has represented India in 36 Tests, 89 ODIs, and 70 T20Is.
For the T20I series against Sri Lanka, India has included pacers Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohammed Siraj, while Harshit Rana earns his maiden call-up for the ODI series. The first T20I will be played on July 27, with additional matches on July 28 and 30 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The ODI series will follow on August 2, 4, and 7 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Gambhir’s clear stance on managing players’ workloads reflects his strategic approach to balancing team fitness and performance.
