Gautam Gambhir involved in an incident with an umpire during the KKR vs PBKS match
On Saturday, Jonny Bairstow achieved an unbeaten century, leading the Punjab Kings to a record-breaking run chase against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite a slow start to the season, Bairstow demonstrated his batting prowess by scoring 108 runs off just 48 balls, helping the Punjab Kings achieve a remarkable 262-run chase, the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket history. The team reached the target with eight wickets and eight balls to spare. Despite the disappointing outcome, Kolkata Knight Riders remain in second place in the points table.
However, KKR mentor Gambhir lost his composure after the final ball of the 14th over in KKR’s innings, and fans on social media took notice of the incident.
The PBKS spinner, Rahul Chahar, delivered a short delivery outside the off stump to Andre Russell, who hit the ball towards the cover region. Ashutosh Sharma successfully prevented the ball from crossing the boundary rope.
Ashutosh promptly threw the ball to the wicketkeeper, but Jitesh Sharma was unable to collect it, and it went past him. Russell promptly gained ground on the overthrow. However, the umpires ruled that the over had already ended before the throw, and therefore denied KKR the run.
Gambhir became visibly upset and began arguing with a match official near the dugout. Also in attendance was KKR captain Shreyas Iyer. The impassioned exchange between Gambhir and the fourth umpire continued until the former KKR captain departed.
Meanwhile, the centurion Jonny Bairstow was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his exemplary performance, which included an impressive eight fours and nine sixes.
Shashank Singh scored 68 not out in just 28 balls, showcasing remarkable consistency with eight sixes and two fours.
