Gavaskar Backs Bumrah as Captain Amid Rohit’s Potential Absence

With questions surrounding Rohit Sharma's availability for the first Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia, Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar appoint Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the entire series. Reports indicate Rohit may miss the opener in Perth on November 22, as he awaits the birth of his second child. While Rohit has not yet confirmed his participation, he recently told the media he remains undecided, saying, "Right now, I am not too sure whether I'll be going, but let's see. Fingers crossed."

Gavaskar voiced his concern that Rohit’s potential absence could impact team morale and continuity. Speaking with India Today, Gavaskar explained that designating Bumrah as captain for the full tour would ensure stability. He emphasised the importance of starting an overseas series with a stable captaincy, especially after India’s recent 3-0 home loss to New Zealand. He noted that a captain’s absence in the opener puts undue pressure on the vice-captain, and clear leadership is essential in light of recent setbacks.

Recalling Virat Kohli's 2020-21 tour departure for family reasons, Gavaskar highlighted that there was then clear communication and expectations. Now, he says, transparency is needed, so the squad can prepare effectively, stressing that "Indian cricket comes first."
