GMR Group Acquires Majority Shares in Hampshire Cricket Club

The GMR Group, co-owners of the IPL team Delhi Capitals, has finalised a deal to purchase major shares in the English county team Hampshire for 120 million pounds (approximately Rs 1278 crore). This acquisition marks Hampshire as the first county cricket team to be owned by an overseas entity, with GMR Group obtaining control over 51 percent of the team's shares. According to a report by the Telegraph, Delhi Capitals' co-owners outbid the Lucknow Super Giants, another IPL franchise, with an offer that includes Hampshire’s debts of around 60 million pounds. Additionally, GMR Group will assume control of the Utilita Bowl cricket stadium, the Hilton hotel, and a golf course at the same venue.

Besides their investment in the Delhi Capitals, GMR Group also has equal stakes in Dubai Capitals (ILT20 team in the UAE) and Seattle Orcas (Major League Cricket team in the USA).

An official announcement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Hampshire club officials, and the new owners is anticipated soon. This significant investment could potentially allow Hampshire access to young players from the Delhi Capitals for domestic tournaments such as the Hundred, although current regulations by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prevent active Indian cricketers from participating in overseas tournaments.

In related news, Yorkshire, another English county cricket club, has resumed discussions with Rajasthan Royals regarding a potential takeover. However, this takeover would require approval from 6000 Yorkshire members through a ballot.
