Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets to secure their second victory in IPL 2024
Gujarat Titans' middle order delivered a clinical batting performance, leading to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. The win propelled them into the top four of the 2024 Indian Premier League.
Sai Sudharsan, the impact substitute, scored 45 runs off 36 balls, while David Miller contributed an unbeaten 44 off 27 balls. Gujarat reached the target of 168-3 in just 19.1 overs.
The Sunrisers, who scored the highest-ever total of 277-3 in franchise T20 cricket in their last match against Mumbai Indians, were limited to 162-8 in 20 overs. Medium pacer Mohit Sharma took 3-25 in four overs.
Hyderabad opted to bat first and made a relatively quick start with openers Mayank Agarwal (16) and Travis Head (19) adding 34 runs off 26 balls for the first wicket.
Gujarat's pacers played a crucial role in limiting Hyderabad's progress. Sharma removed hard-hitting youngster Abhishek Sharma after he scored 29 runs off 20 balls.
Umesh Yadav then dismissed Aiden Markram (17), and the Sunrisers struggled to build momentum in their innings.
The turning point came when wrist spinner Rashid Khan bowled Heinrich Klaasen, who had hit two sixes, for 24 runs off 13 balls. Hyderabad was reduced to 108-4 in 13.4 overs.
Shahbaz Ahmed (22) and Abdul Samad (29) built momentum in the death overs, adding 45 runs off 28 balls for the sixth wicket. However, Ahmed was caught off Sharma.
Washington Sundar, who was the impact substitute, was then caught for a golden duck. As a result, Hyderabad could only manage a below-par total.
In response, the Titans got off to a quick start once again, thanks to Wriddhiman Saha, who scored 25 runs off 13 balls, including two sixes.
Skipper Shubman Gill scored 36 runs off 28 balls, and the duo put on 36 runs off 25 balls before Saha was caught out.
Gill then added 38 runs with Sudharsan for the second wicket before being caught at long on.
Gujarat was already in a strong position at 74-2 in 9.1 overs when Sudharsan and Miller joined forces.
Despite Pat Cummins' spell of 1-28 in four overs, Miller and Shankar added 64 runs off 42 balls and maintained control of the game.
After dismissing Sudharsan, the Australia and Hyderabad skipper stretched the game into the final over. However, Miller and Vijay Shankar (14 not out) stayed put to secure the Titans' second win in three games.
In the day's second game at Visakhapatnam, Delhi Capitals will face table-topping Chennai Super Kings.
