India to drop Virat Kohli from their squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024
If Virat Kohli is to have any chance of making the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, he will have to perform exceptionally well for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League 2024. According to a report in the Telegraph, the selectors are not interested in keeping Kohli in the team as they feel Virat hasn't been able to play the aggressive brand of cricket in the shortest format.
Kohli made a surprise return, along with Rohit Sharma, for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan after a 14-month absence from the T20 side. BCCI secretary Jay Shah later confirmed that Rohit would lead India in the global event. He remained tight-lipped on Kohli's T20 future.
The report goes on to say that the BCCI has given chief selector Ajit Agarkar the responsibility of deciding Virat Kohli's future. The former player had a chat with Virat about the need for aggressive batting in the shortest format of his game at the international level.
Kohli tried it against Afghanistan but failed. The management (Roihit and Dravid) feel that the slow wickets of West Indies and USA will not suit Virat's batting, so Ajit Agarkar will convince the veteran to make way for a young player. The BCCI top brass feels that the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Shivam Dube add more value to the team than Kohli.
The report also revealed that KL Rahul is the first choice for the wicketkeeper slot. However, his fitness is a concern. Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel are the other two options and their performance in the IPL will be the deciding factor in their selection. The list of probables will be sent to the ICC by the first week of May.
