Is MS Dhoni’s IPL Career Coming to an End? CSK Evaluates Retention Options

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently revealed the retention rules for the IPL 2025 season, introducing a significant change that could impact the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Notably, any player who hasn’t represented India in the last five years will be classified as ‘uncapped,’ which lowers the retention cost for franchises. This rule applies to former Indian captain MS Dhoni, allowing CSK the opportunity to retain him for ₹4 crore.

However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan shared uncertainty regarding Dhoni's future in the IPL. He noted that the franchise hasn’t yet engaged in discussions with Dhoni, who was in the United States at the time. Viswanathan stated, "We might not even use the retention option for MS. It’s premature to comment as we haven’t had conversations with him yet. I am travelling this week, but we anticipate that talks may happen soon, providing more clarity."

Dhoni, who stepped away from international cricket in 2020, last played for India in July 2019, during the ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. According to the new IPL regulations, promotions from ‘capped’ to ‘uncapped’ status depend solely on a player's participation in international matches and existing BCCI contracts. The anticipation surrounding Dhoni’s IPL tenure continues as fans and officials await his decision.
