IPL 2024: Information on Retentions, RTM, and Impact Player Rule

The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is generating significant discussion among franchises, particularly regarding player retention and auction rules. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled a meeting with franchise owners, likely to be led by IPL CEO Hemang Amin, to address key issues ahead of the anticipated mega-auction in December.

One of the major topics of discussion will be the potential return of the Right to Match (RTM) option, which was eliminated in 2022 following the introduction of new teams, the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. The RTM option previously allowed franchises to retain up to five players—three through auction and two via RTM—which helped teams maintain their core unit. With a push from franchises to reinstate this rule, owners argue that it promotes continuity and enhances strategic consistency across the league.

Additionally, there is a strong push to increase the number of retained players from four back to eight for the upcoming season. Team owners believe that greater retention will lead to improved team stability, fostering synergies and loyalty among fans.

Despite the criticism of the Impact Player rule from prominent Indian players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, reports indicate that the rule is likely to remain in place. Stakeholders and franchises see it as a mechanism that has enhanced the competitive intensity of matches.

As the BCCI prepares for this crucial meeting, it will be pivotal in shaping the future dynamics of player retention and overall team strategies in the IPL.
