The mega auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to take place at the end of November or early December, according to sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The official rules and guidelines for the auction will be released in the coming days, as confirmed by BCCI insiders on Wednesday.
This will be the third mega auction in the past decade, following the ones held in 2014 and 2018, which marked the return of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings after their two-year suspensions. The 2021 mega auction had to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting teams to extend player contracts by an additional year.
BCCI sources informed IANS, “The IPL 2025 auction is expected to take place in late November or early December. Official details will be out shortly.”
Similar to the auctions held in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the upcoming mega auction will likely span two days. In the 2022 mega auction, teams were allowed to retain up to four players. With the three-year player retention cycle ending, there are discussions among franchises about whether to increase the retention cap to eight players or stick to the current limit of four or five, with varying opinions among teams.
