Irfan Pathan responds to MS Dhoni's decision to step down as captain

“His legacy as CSK’s leader shines bright”

MS Dhoni has stepped down as the captain of Chennai Super Kings for the Indian Premier League 2024 season. He has handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, a long-time member of the franchise.

Dhoni's decision has surprised many, as they were expecting him to return as the skipper of the most successful franchise.

Irfan Pathan, a former India player who shared the dressing room with Dhoni, paid tribute to the legendary leader and wished Gaikwad good luck.

Pathan played with Dhoni at international level and for CSK in the IPL.

He wrote on X:

“In the ever-expanding galaxy of cricket, MS Dhoni’s legacy as CSK’s leader shines bright, akin to a supernova, illuminating the path for the franchise with unparalleled brilliance and allure. His leadership will be remembered for decades to come. Good luck Ruturaj for your new responsibility as a CSK leader.”

CSK has been crowned champions five times and has been runners-up on many occasions since the start of the league in 2008. MSD was at the helm from day one and went on to captain the team and win it all.

The last season was the toughest for the Jharkhand-based cricketer as he battled a knee injury but continued to lead the side. CSK defeated Gujarat Titans in the final to add another trophy to their cabinet.

In 2022, Dhoni stepped down as captain and Ravindra Jadeja took over. Jadeja was unable to lead the team effectively, and Dhoni had to resume his role as skipper mid-season. As a result, Chennai had one of its worst seasons in years.
