Isa Guha Apologises for Calling Bumrah “Primate”
Cricket commentator Isa Guha apologised after describing Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah as the "most valuable primate" during the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. The comment, made while praising Bumrah’s stellar performance, sparked backlash due to the term’s racial connotations.
Today, Guha addressed the controversy, expressing regret for her poor choice of words.
"Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways... I'd like to apologise for any offence caused," said Guha.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri commended her for taking responsibility, urging fans to move on as the Indian team focused on the match. Bumrah, undeterred, continued his dominance, claiming six wickets in the innings.
The incident also highlights cricket’s ongoing struggle with issues of racism, echoing past controversies like the Harbhajan Singh-Andrew Symonds dispute. It serves as a reminder of the importance of sensitivity in sports commentary.
