It is given a chance to Stubbs to secure the crucial No. 3 spot in SA's Test batting lineup

Tristan Stubbs, who will turn 24 next week, is set to be given an extended chance to secure the crucial No. 3 spot in South Africa's Test batting lineup. This was confirmed by coach Shukri Conrad on Tuesday, ahead of the team's first Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain.

Although Stubbs is known for his explosive batting in the Twenty20 format, he will now be tasked with a significant role in Test cricket. His only previous Test appearance, against India in January, yielded just four runs across two innings, contributing to South Africa's seven-wicket defeat.

South Africa has struggled to find a consistent and reliable batsman for the No. 3 position. By offering Stubbs an extended opportunity, the team management hopes to resolve this issue and allow the young player to prove himself in the longest format of the game.

Conrad expressed confidence in Stubbs, noting that his technique and imposing physical presence are key factors in his selection. "Facing the new ball frequently, Tristan ticks all the boxes. He's a strong and imposing player, and I value that presence at the top of the order. However, the true measure will be in his performance on the field. I’m confident we’ll see positive results."

South Africa's upcoming Test series marks their first since sending a second-string team to New Zealand in February, where they suffered two heavy defeats. They will face a West Indies team that recently competed in a three-Test series in England.

"Despite their recent series loss, the Windies will come into this series with confidence from their solid performances," Conrad added.
