Karnataka Mourns the Loss of Visionary Leader SM Krishna

Karnataka bid farewell to former Chief Minister SM Krishna, who passed away on Tuesday morning at his residence in Sadashivanagar at the age of 92. His death marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of transformative leadership that shaped the state’s identity.

Former cricketer Anil Kumble expressed his condolences, highlighting the profound impact of Krishna’s leadership. 

"His demise is a huge loss for Karnataka...As a CM, his contribution to the state goes beyond his tenure. Bengaluru to become 'Silicon Valley' and to put on the map itself is his contribution, that will always be remembered...," Kumble said.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, a long-time friend of Krishna, announced that the funeral would take place on Wednesday in Krishna’s hometown, Somanahalli in Mandya district.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shared his grief, calling Krishna’s passing a shocking loss. He described Karnataka’s debt to Krishna for his instrumental role in advancing the IT and BT sectors, particularly during his time as Chief Minister. In a heartfelt post on X, Siddaramaiah praised Krishna’s unmatched service as a state and union leader, acknowledging his guidance and well-wishing in Siddaramaiah’s early political career. Krishna’s disciplined life and visionary mindset, he noted, serve as an inspiration for aspiring politicians.

Born in 1932, Krishna served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 and later as India’s External Affairs Minister during the UPA government from 2009 to 2012. He also held the position of Maharashtra Governor. A long-time Congress leader, Krishna joined the BJP in 2017, bringing an end to his nearly five-decade-long association with the Congress party. He retired from active politics in 2022 after a remarkable career of public service.

Karnataka will remember SM Krishna as a statesman who envisioned a modern, globally connected state, leaving an indelible mark on its development.
