Latham's Bold Approach: How NZ Plans to Take on India

Tom Latham, New Zealand’s new Test captain, is urging his team to play without fear in the upcoming three-match series against India, as they aim to reverse their recent struggles in the World Test Championship. The Kiwis are looking to break a losing streak of four consecutive Test defeats, which has dampened their hopes of making the WTC final.

Latham has assumed the captaincy full-time after Tim Southee stepped down following the Sri Lanka series. His first challenge will be in India, with Tests scheduled in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. New Zealand’s track record in India is far from promising, with only two victories in 36 matches—the last of which came in 1988.

Latham emphasised the need to play with freedom and aggression, particularly in India. "We need to play with no fear and take it to them," Latham said, pointing out that teams that have done well in India have often adopted an attacking mindset. He believes this strategy could be key to putting India under pressure.

Reflecting on the recent series in Sri Lanka, Latham highlighted some positive aspects despite the losses. "Apart from one innings, we played really well. It’s about continuing that and playing a brand of cricket we’re proud of."

Latham, who has captained New Zealand in nine Tests as a stand-in, will also be faced with tough selection decisions, including whether Tim Southee retains his place in the XI after a challenging period. Latham remains confident in Southee's abilities, praising his experience and contributions to the team.
