Shoaib Malik has launched a blistering critique of Pakistan's captain Babar Azam and the batting strategy of the team's senior players, particularly during their recent loss to India in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Following a below-par total by India and a promising position in the chase, Pakistan's abrupt collapse in the run chase prompted Malik to question the leadership of Babar Azam and the approach of seasoned player Mohammad Rizwan.
"I've been advocating for a while now: it's time to relinquish the captaincy. Babar, you're a player of immense calibre, but your true potential can only shine when unburdened by additional responsibilities," expressed Shoaib Malik during a Ten Sports interview.
The former captain minced no words in his assessment of Pakistan's batting display, singling out Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan for scrutiny.
"Much is said about Babar and Rizwan's strike rates, yet Saim Ayub was introduced," Malik noted. "In a chase of 120, why the urge to elevate the strike rate? The groundwork was laid comprehensively. If, as a leader and a batsman, one's strategic acumen fails to manifest in such scenarios, when will it?" he added, expressing frustration.
Malik also raised doubts about Mohammad Rizwan's shot selection against India, stating, "I couldn't fathom Rizwan's shot. They brought back their key bowler for a breakthrough, and Rizwan, with his experience, should have seized the moment, declaring it as his match."
Pakistan is slated to confront Canada next at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Tuesday.
