Mark Wood's idea of the perfect fast bowler

Mark Wood, the England fast bowler, recently shared his thoughts on the attributes that make up the perfect fast bowler in a video for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). He highlighted five key categories: run-up, leap, front leg position, delivery, and aura, selecting some of the greatest bowlers in cricket history to represent each attribute.

Run-up: Wood praised the legendary West Indies bowler Michael Holding for his elegant and effective run-up. He depicted Holding's style as "gliding effortlessly," which provided momentum and precision aimed straight at the off stump.

Leap: For leap, Wood selected Alan Donald, known as 'White Lightning.' He noted Donald's upright, aggressive leap, which not only looked impressive but also contributed to his overall speed and direction towards the batsman.

Front Leg Position: When considering the bracing of the front leg, Wood chose Brett Lee, the Australian speedster. He admired Lee's ability to brace his long front leg perfectly, making him look as if he was charging directly at the batsman, creating an intimidating presence.

Delivery: The South African great Dale Steyn was Wood's choice for the delivery mechanism. He highlighted Steyn's capability to swing the ball late at high speeds, often resulting in the stumps being shattered, making him a nightmare for batsmen.

AuraThe final attribute was named after the formidable Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistani pacer famously known as the "Rawalpindi Express." Wood marvelled at Akhtar's presence on the field, recalling how his speed and charisma made him an imposing figure as he sprinted in to bowl.

In summary, Mark Wood effectively combined attributes from five iconic fast bowlers to assemble what he considers the perfect fast bowler, showcasing the immense talent and diversity that has existed in the world of cricket.
