Mohammad Kaif identified the 35-year-old as the most effective opening batsman

The opening batters play a pivotal role in their franchises in the Indian Premier League 2024. Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, and Sunil Narine have all demonstrated their ability to score runs. Former India player Mohammad Kaif has stated that Virat is the most effective opener in the 17th season of the tournament. He was discussing the player's performance in the middle overs.

Virat is currently facing significant criticism for his strike rate in the ongoing season. The veteran has equalled the record for the slowest hundred in the history of the highly lucrative league.

Mohammad Kaif said on Star Sports:

“Virat Kohli is the best opener when it comes to the strike rate in the middle overs. He is scoring runs at a strike rate of 140 when spinners are bowling. There is no other opener, who is even near to him. Kohli is batting well and there is no point in highlighting his rate of scoring. Virat hasn’t batted slow.” 

Virat has scored 500 runs in IPL 2024, with 104 fifties. Other opening batters who have performed well include Ruturaj Gaikwad (447), KL Rahul (378), Sunil Narine (357) and Travis Head (338).
