Mohammad Nabi Eyes Champions Trophy as His Grand Farewell

After Afghanistan’s ODI series win over Bangladesh, former captain Mohammad Nabi expressed his desire to participate in next year's ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The 39-year-old veteran was instrumental in Afghanistan’s 2-1 series victory, sealed by a narrow five-wicket win in Sharjah, where opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s impressive eighth ODI century led the charge. This triumph marks Afghanistan’s third consecutive series win, following victories over Ireland and South Africa, reflecting their rise as a thrilling force in white-ball cricket globally, thanks to strong performances at recent ICC tournaments.

Despite being in the twilight of his career, Nabi sees the Champions Trophy as a last opportunity to claim an ICC title. Reflecting on his journey, he shared that while he had considered retiring after the last World Cup, the prospect of playing one more Champions Trophy was appealing. He mentioned how his experience and guidance could benefit the younger players.

During the Bangladesh series, Nabi showcased his all-round capabilities with 135 runs and two wickets. His unbeaten 34 in the final match was crucial in helping Afghanistan chase down a target of 245 with ten balls to spare at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Azmatullah Omarzai, another all-rounder, earned the Player of the Match award in the final game with his four-wicket haul and unbeaten 70, sharing a match-winning partnership with Nabi. Gurbaz, meanwhile, made headlines with a powerful innings of 101, marking his third century of the year and further cementing his record for most ODI hundreds by an Afghan player.

Before the Champions Trophy in February-March next year, Afghanistan is set to tour Zimbabwe, where they’ll play a multi-format series, including T20Is, ODIs, and Tests in Bulawayo. This tour promises an exciting opportunity for the team to fine-tune their skills in preparation for the prestigious tournament.
