NCA will advise on Mohammed Shami's conditions

India's fast bowler Mohammed Shami is progressing well in his recovery from the ankle injury that has sidelined him since the ODI World Cup last November. However, his availability for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia remains uncertain. According to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, a final decision regarding Shami’s participation will be made based on the report from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), where Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation.

Shami resumed bowling last month after surgery and has gradually increased his workload without any reported discomfort. The target for his comeback is India’s home Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19 in Chennai. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier hinted that this series is the likely timeline for Shami’s return, although the final decision will depend on his fitness assessment from the NCA.

Shami’s record in Australia is noteworthy, with 31 wickets in eight Tests at an average of 32.16, including two five-wicket hauls. His presence could be crucial for India as they prepare for the high-stakes series Down Under later this year.

In addition, Jay Shah confirmed that VVS Laxman will continue as the head of the NCA. Laxman’s contract, which began in December 2021, is set to expire in September 2024, but the BCCI appears satisfied with his tenure and plans to extend it further.
