Nick Hockley has announced to step down after the upcoming season

Nick Hockley, CEO of Cricket Australia, has announced that he will step down after the upcoming season, concluding nearly 13 years in Australian cricket, including five years as CA CEO. "This was a tough decision. However, with what promises to be an exciting summer ahead and our five-year strategic plan well underway, now is the right moment to seek new challenges while giving the Board ample time to find my successor who can build on the solid foundation we've established. For now, my focus remains on the season and supporting the Board in a smooth transition," Hockley stated in a Cricket Australia media release.

CA Chairman Mike Baird confirmed that Hockley has informed the Board that next summer will be his last as CEO.

Baird noted that Hockley has guided the sport through unprecedented challenges during the pandemic, achieving significant growth and stability. Under his leadership, major deals have been secured, many extending over the next seven years, setting the stage for continued success.

He also highlighted that Hockley’s focus remains on delivering a successful season for fans, players, broadcasters, partners, and the entire Australian cricket community. There will be an opportunity to celebrate Hockley’s accomplishments when he steps down next year. Baird emphasised that the timing of Hockley’s decision allows the Board to ensure a smooth transition and that the process of finding his successor will begin shortly.

Hockley is expected to leave his position around the end of March 2025, depending on the successor appointment process.

Initially appointed interim CEO of Cricket Australia in June 2020 and confirmed as permanent CEO eleven months later, Hockley has led CA through two pandemic-affected seasons. His tenure has seen the establishment of a new five-year strategy, seven-year media deals with Seven West Media, Foxtel Group, and Disney Star in India, a new player MOU with the Australian Cricketers' Association, which included a 66% increase in pay for female cricketers, and a revitalised Big Bash League.

On the field, Hockley’s leadership has brought remarkable success, including Australia's first tour to Pakistan in 24 years, Ashes victories, six ICC trophies (including the Women's and Men's Cricket World Cups in 2022 and 2023, the T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2023, the World Test Championship in 2023, and the Men's Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2024), Commonwealth Games gold in 2022, among other achievements.

Hockley began his involvement with Australian cricket in October 2012 as GM of Commercial & Marketing for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, which attracted over 1 million fans and generated more than $1 billion for the Australian and New Zealand economies.

Following a brief role as Head of Commercial Projects, Hockley was appointed CEO of the Local Organising Committee for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in 2017, leading the record-breaking Women's T20 World Cup Final, attended by 86,174 fans at the MCG.
