Nissanka and Mendis are trying to assist Sri Lanka

Pathum Nissanka's outstanding unbeaten fifty has put Sri Lanka in a strong position as they chase a challenging target for victory in the third Test against England at The Oval. The match is poised for an exciting conclusion, with Sri Lanka starting the day at 94-1 and requiring just 125 more runs to secure their first Test win over England in a long time, breaking a streak of seven consecutive defeats.

Nissanka, who had already scored 64 runs in Sri Lanka's first innings, showcased his form by reaching his second fifty of the match with a series of aggressive shots, including a brilliant cover drive off debutant Josh Hull. His partner, Kusal Mendis, has also stepped up, contributing an unbeaten 30 runs, capitalising on England's loose deliveries.

England's initial struggles with the bat were highlighted by Jamie Smith's counter-attacking innings of 67, which proved crucial after they found themselves in a precarious position at 82-7. Smith's effort, including ten fours and a six, helped England recover to 156 all out, providing their bowlers a target to defend. His dismissal just before tea marked the end of a splendid 50-ball knock.

Sri Lanka's bowlers made significant impacts, particularly Vishwa Fernando, who took three wickets for 40 runs, and Lahiru Kumara, who claimed four for just 21 runs. Their efforts were pivotal in exploiting England's batting weaknesses, leading to a dramatic collapse from 221-3 to 325 all out in their first innings.

The match has seen its share of criticisms directed towards England's batting, particularly their inability to maintain momentum after a strong start. With Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and other key players failing to contribute significantly, the pressure mounts as Sri Lanka inches closer to a historic victory.

As the Test approaches its climax, all eyes will be on Nissanka and Mendis to guide Sri Lanka to what would be a remarkable and morale-boosting win, while England will strive to defend their lead and complete a series victory.
