Pakistan team for or against Babar Azam?

Pakistan cricketers Imam-ul-Haq and Ahmed Shehzad found themselves in a heated debate on live television regarding Babar Azam's captaincy. Shehzad accused Azam of showing favouritism towards certain players despite their poor form, sparking a contentious exchange between the two players during the talk show 'Haarna Mana Hai!' (Losing Is Not An Option!).

Shehzad argued that senior players in the Pakistan team, including Azam, have often played against weaker opponents, limiting opportunities for younger talent. He even drew a comparison with Team India, highlighting how Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are occasionally rested to give budding players a chance.

The focal point of the discussion revolved around Babar Azam's leadership. Azam had stepped down as captain after Pakistan's disappointing exit from the 2023 Cricket World Cup, with Shaheen Afridi taking over. However, just before the 2024 T20 World Cup, Azam was reinstated as captain.

Imam defended Azam, stating that the decision to reinstate him was made by the board, and Azam did not request to reclaim the captaincy. He emphasised Pakistan's past performances under Azam's leadership, noting their appearances in the semi-finals and final of major tournaments.

Despite Imam's defence, Shehzad criticised the handling of Shaheen Afridi's captaincy, arguing that he was unjustly stripped of the role. The debate intensified as both players exchanged differing viewpoints on player management and team dynamics.

In response to Shehzad's assertions, Imam reaffirmed his stance, asserting that his opinion would remain consistent regardless of his age or contractual obligations.

As this off-field controversy unfolds, Pakistan supporters will hope that it does not adversely affect the team's performance as they aim for a second T20 World Cup title. Pakistan's campaign kicks off with a match against hosts USA on June 6, followed by a highly anticipated clash against India on June 9.
