Pat Cummins makes significant progress in Purple Cap race for IPL 2024
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced a stunning display of modern T20 batting to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 25 runs in a high-scoring encounter at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first. Siraj was dropped and Maxwell was ruled out through injury.
SRH set a new IPL record by amassing 287/3, mainly propelled by Travis Head’s century. Head, in exceptional form, smashed 102 runs off just 41 balls, hitting eight sixes. Heinrich Klaasen's quickfire 67 off 31 deliveries contributed to SRH's onslaught, resulting in a record 22 sixes in their innings.
RCB started their chase strongly, with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis aggressively scoring, but struggled to maintain the required run rate. Dinesh Karthik's explosive 83 off 35 balls and du Plessis' 62 kept RCB in contention, but they fell short, finishing on 262/7.
Pat Cummins was outstanding for SRH, taking 3 crucial wickets for 43 runs. Despite RCB's defeat, Karthik's innings was enthralling, adding seven sixes to the excitement. His quickfire 83 off 35 balls gave RCB a glimmer of hope but was ultimately not enough to see them win.
Purple Cap Table following RCB vs SRH match
Yuzvendra Chahal, the leg spinner from Rajasthan, currently leads the Purple Cap table with 11 wickets in 6 matches. However, Sunrisers' victory over RCB in yesterday's encounter caused a major change in the top 5 of the points table. The Sunrisers' skipper jumped to fourth place after taking 3/43 in a high-scoring game.
Cummins displayed his crafty bowling skills by using cutters and bouncers on the Chinnaswamy track. He used his height effectively, hitting hard lengths with an occasional yorker. He has taken the wickets of Faf Du Plessis, Saurav Chauhan, and Mahipal Lomror, bringing his total to 9 wickets in 6 games with an impressive economy of 7.87. Bumrah and Mustafizur Rahman are currently ranked above him in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.
