The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to implement rigorous fitness tests before awarding central contracts for the upcoming year. These tests will include not only currently contracted players but also other international and domestic performers.
Scheduled to take place from September 6 to 8 in Lahore, the fitness evaluations will be overseen by white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten, along with the team's physiotherapist and trainer. Following the tests, the players will head to Faisalabad for the Champions Cup.
A reliable source within the PCB stated, "The fitness tests will be a key factor in determining which players receive contracts this year, though performances will also be considered." Both Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, the foreign coaches, have emphasised that fitness will be the primary criterion for player selection.
Gillespie reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the fitness levels of some players during recent Test matches against Bangladesh, noting that they struggled to maintain intensity and endurance throughout the games. Kirsten shared similar concerns during discussions with selectors and board officials.
The fitness assessments will cover a range of metrics, including gym training, stamina and endurance runs, the Yo-Yo test, and other evaluations to determine overall player fitness. Currently, the PCB has awarded central contracts to approximately 27 players, but this number may be reduced this time based on the national team's performance across all formats over the past year.
The decision comes after Pakistan's disappointing 2-0 defeat in a recent Test series against Bangladesh, which has led to widespread criticism of both players and board officials.
