Press conference with Gautam Gambhir
In his first press conference as the head coach of the Indian cricket team (ICT), Gautam Gambhir tackled various questions, including those about his relationship with Virat Kohli. Known for his straightforward demeanour, Gambhir addressed concerns about any potential strain between him and Kohli, stemming from their past on-field clashes during the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Relationship with Virat Kohli:
- Gambhir dismissed the idea of a strained relationship with Kohli, highlighting that their interactions are not a matter of public concern but are based on mutual professionalism and respect.
- "Good for the TRP, but my relationship is not public. What kind of relationship do I share with Virat Kohli, I think it's between two mature individuals," Gambhir stated.
- He emphasised the distinction between on-field competitiveness and off-field camaraderie. "On the field, everyone has got the right to fight for their own team... But at the moment, we are representing India and 140 crore Indians, and I am sure we have to be on the same page and try to make India proud."
Professionalism and Team Unity:
- Gambhir reassured that both he and Kohli are committed to the same goal: representing and making India proud. He underscored their shared dedication to the Indian team and their professional conduct.
- "I share a very good relationship (with Kohli) off the field, and we will continue to do that," he added, reinforcing their professional harmony.
Support Staff for the Sri Lanka Tour:
- Gambhir confirmed the support staff for India's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The team includes:
- Abhishek Nayar: Assistant Coach
- Sairaj Bahutule: Interim Bowling Coach
- T Dilip: Fielding Coach
- Ryan ten Doeschate: Set to join the team in Colombo
Gambhir's press conference highlighted his professional approach and his focus on team unity and performance. By addressing the media's concerns about his relationship with Kohli, Gambhir aimed to put any speculations to rest and reinforce the collective goal of making India proud on the international stage. The confirmation of the support staff for the Sri Lanka tour also indicates a well-prepared coaching setup under Gambhir's leadership.
