Rathour recently shared insights into Sharma’s leadership style

Former Team India batting coach Vikram Rathour recently shared insights into Rohit Sharma’s leadership style, praising the Indian captain's strategic thinking and on-field decision-making. Rathour highlighted how Rohit’s surprising tactics, like bringing in Jasprit Bumrah early during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, were crucial in India’s victory.

Speaking on the podcast “Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli,” Rathour described Rohit as a “shrewd tactician” with an excellent understanding of the game. He humorously noted that while Rohit might occasionally forget simple things like whether he’s chosen to bat or bowl after the toss or leave his phone behind on the team bus, he never forgets his game plan. Rathour emphasised three key qualities that make Rohit an exceptional captain.

First, Rathour highlighted Rohit’s prowess as a batsman and his deep understanding of his own game, allowing him to consistently lead by example. “He is a phenomenal player who always has a clear game plan,” said Rathour. He noted that Rohit’s ability to perform under pressure sets a benchmark for the team.

Second, Rathour praised Rohit’s investment in his players and his approach as a “player’s captain.” According to Rathour, Rohit is highly involved in the team’s strategies and meetings, often sitting with both the bowlers and batters to understand their perspectives. “I’ve never seen a captain so invested in team meetings and strategies,” Rathour remarked.

Lastly, Rathour emphasised Rohit’s tactical acumen on the field, recalling how his decision to finish Bumrah’s overs early in the T20 World Cup final initially puzzled some observers. However, the move was instrumental in setting up a scenario where South Africa needed 16 runs in the last over, ultimately leading to India’s triumph. Rathour acknowledged that as a coach, even he was sometimes surprised by Rohit’s decisions, only to realise later how spot-on they were.

Rathour’s reflections shed light on Rohit Sharma’s unique approach to captaincy, combining game awareness, tactical innovation, and a deep connection with his team.
