Robin Uthappa names Rohit Sharma's successor as Indian team captain

The Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, beat the Punjab Kings by three wickets on April 21. India opener Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to lead the national side, according to Robin Uthappa. Gill's performance secured Gujarat's fourth win of the 2024 Indian Premier League. He took over the captaincy ahead of the start of the 17th edition.

Speaking on JioCinema after Gujarat's 3-wicket win, Uthappa was full of praise for Gill, describing the star batsman as "a gift to Indian cricket" who is maturing into an all-time great. The former cricketer was also of the view that Gill was slowly turning into a productive leader with the potential of a national captaincy:

“In my opinion, he is a tremendous asset to Indian cricket, maturing into an all-time great within. We have witnessed him flourish and develop into an accomplished leader who is likely to captain not only his IPL team but also the Indian national team in the years to come.”

Uthappa praised Gill's measured approach in his innings of 35 but felt the GT skipper needed some help at the other end.

On April 24, GT will next play against DC.
