Rohit Sharma announced to prolong his cricket career in Tests and ODIs

India's captain Rohit Sharma has indicated his intention to prolong his cricket career in Tests and ODIs following his retirement from T20Is after the T20 World Cup last month.

Following India's victory over South Africa in Barbados, securing his maiden major title as captain, Rohit announced his retirement from T20Is alongside senior players Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. With 4231 runs from 159 matches, including five centuries and 32 fifties, Rohit ended his T20I career as the format's highest run-scorer.

“This was my last (T20I) game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the Cup. I wanted this badly. Very hard to put in words. It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line," Rohit shared with reporters after the final.

Currently on a break, the 37-year-old will miss India's upcoming limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka later this month. Speaking at a promotional event in the US, Rohit affirmed, "I don't plan too far ahead. You'll definitely see me playing for a while."

Rohit remains a pivotal figure in India's plans across longer formats, serving as an opening batsman and captain. He excelled in the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, amassing 597 runs at a strike rate exceeding 120 as India finished as runners-up.

In the World Test Championship era since 2019, Rohit has been India's most prolific batsman, accumulating 2552 runs in 35 matches. In the current 2023-25 cycle, he has amassed 700 runs across seven matches, featuring three centuries and as many fifties.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently confirmed Rohit's leadership for India in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle and the upcoming Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March next year.

Rohit's next assignment is anticipated to be India's first Test of the home season against Bangladesh in Chennai, commencing on September 19.
