Rohit Sharma disagrees with the Impact Player Rule, stating that it harms Indian cricket
Rohit Sharma has expressed his disapproval of the Impact Player's Rule in the Indian Premier League. This rule permits a team to substitute a player from the playing XI with a batter or bowler from the dugout during their batting or bowling. As a result of this rule, teams are now playing with 12 players. Franchises must provide a list of options from which they will select one impact player. This has reduced the significance of authentic all-rounders.
Rohit criticised the move, stating that it was aimed at entertaining fans rather than promoting the sport. During an appearance on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, he expressed concern that the move could be detrimental to the progress of Indian cricket.
“The teams are using this rule to their advantage and are bringing in a player depending on the situation of the game. I don’t endorse it, as cricket is not played like that. We should stick to how the game is conducted across the globe and refrain from adding a rule that is not there in cricket.”
Rohit is currently a member of the Indian Premier League 2024 squad for Mumbai Indians. He scored a century in the last game against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.
