Shafali Verma Excels as India Dominates Nepal in Group Stages
On a night marked by experimentation, India continued their impressive form in the Women’s Asia Cup, maintaining an unbeaten record after defeating Nepal. Opting to bat first with a revised batting order, India scored 178/3, thanks in large part to Shafali Verma's T20I career-high of 81. Nepal, despite their efforts, managed to finish their innings at 96/9 after facing the full 20 overs.
One of the notable changes for India was the appearance of Smriti Mandhana at the toss, while Harmanpreet Kaur, who had not fielded during a previous match against the UAE, rested. Sajana Sajeevan made her debut, and Arundhati Reddy replaced Pooja Vastrakar, who has been active in recent games.
Following Mandhana winning the toss, another experiment quickly unfolded, as she did not participate in the batting sequence after the toss. Instead, Hemalatha Dayalan opened alongside Shafali. The effectiveness of this decision remains up for debate; while Hemalatha provided some valuable time at the crease, finishing until the 14th over, her 42 balls for 47 runs may not suffice to secure her a spot in higher-pressure games, particularly with the potential return of Yastika Bhatia and the impact of Jemimah Rodrigues at No. 3.
In contrast, Shafali displayed confidence and flair, significantly contributing to the team's total. Building on her recent success, including a double century in the Test match against South Africa, she efficiently targeted the gaps in the Nepal bowling attack and showcased her ability to play longer innings. Despite Nepal's lack of catching precision benefiting her innings, Shafali's developing maturity as a batsman is promising for India's prospects.
Reflecting on her performance, Shafali, who was named player of the match, stated, “I focused on my strengths and executed well, which was satisfying. Consistency is improving, but I aim to finish my innings more decisively. The double century gave me a confidence boost that I hope to maintain.”
Jemimah Rodrigues added crucial runs towards the end, pushing the score close to 180, despite initially seeming like Nepal had restricted India effectively. The target posed challenges for the inexperienced Nepal team, while India's Deepti Sharma excelled again, taking three wickets and executing a direct run-out. Arundhati also impressed with her bowling, taking two wickets and solidifying her case for a more regular spot in the lineup.
After the match, Mandhana expressed her satisfaction with Shafali's performance, highlighting the solid finish while noting the need for the middle-order batters to gain more experience, especially given the different wind conditions compared to home.
While India's semi-final competitors have yet to be confirmed officially, their strong group performance likely sets them up to face Bangladesh, unless a significant upset occurs on Wednesday. Pakistan, recovering from their loss to India, finished second in the group and is expected to face Sri Lanka in the other semifinal.
