Shah informed to fully support former cricketer Gaekwad suffering from blood cancer
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has directed the board to allocate Rs 1 crore for the cancer treatment of former India cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad. Gaekwad, undergoing treatment for blood cancer at King’s College Hospital in London, received assurances of support from Shah, who personally reached out to his family to assess the situation.
"The board stands by Gaekwad’s family in this hour of crisis and will do whatever is essential for Mr Gaekwad’s quick recovery. The BCCI will continue to monitor Mr Gaekwad’s progress and is confident that he will come out of this phase strongly," stated the BCCI Apex Council. They continue to monitor Gaekwad's progress, expressing confidence in his eventual recovery.
Gaekwad, known for his career spanning 13 years from 1974 to 1987, represented India in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs, accumulating over 2000 runs. Recently, former cricketers rallied behind him, urging BCCI intervention. Following the announcement of a Rs 125 crore bonus for India's T20 World Cup triumph, former player Sandeep Patil highlighted Gaekwad's need for financial aid.
Gaekwad, 71, also served as India's head coach for two terms and led the team to a runner-up finish in the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy.
