Sharma and Kohlis' availability for the initial rounds of the Duleep Trophy

The upcoming Duleep Trophy is generating significant excitement, particularly regarding the potential participation of Indian cricket stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares for the tournament, which starts on September 5, questions remain about the duo's availability for the initial rounds.

After India's white-ball tour in Sri Lanka, which concluded with a disappointing ODI series loss after a T20I clean sweep, the team is entering a brief international break before their home season begins with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting on September 19. The Duleep Trophy serves as an important prep ground for this series, especially with the additional three-Test series against New Zealand set for October.

The new format for the Duleep Trophy, which no longer follows a zonal model, will see Rohit and Kohli potentially leading and playing for separate squads—India A, B, C, and D—adding a layer of intrigue to the tournament. This setup is reminiscent of the old Challenger Series, bringing back fond memories for fans.

The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is also eyeing several other key players, including Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Surykumar Yadav, and Kuldeep Yadav, to participate in the tournament. However, Jasprit Bumrah's absence is notable, as he continues his rest period, which might extend due to anticipated spin-friendly conditions for the Bangladesh series.

Currently, the BCCI is deliberating on the tournament’s venue, with Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh being the initial choice. However, logistical concerns regarding air travel may lead to a shift to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for at least the opening rounds.

While the BCCI is organising a training camp in Chennai before the Bangladesh Tests, the final confirmation of Rohit and Kohli's participation in the Duleep Trophy hinges on this preparation camp. Fans and cricket enthusiasts alike are keenly watching for updates as the domestic tournament approaches.
